Got a call yesterday from a detective in Overland Park, Ks wanting to know if the license tag on our Chrysler 300 was missing.  I went out to the garage and strangely enough, we had a different tag on our car.  He said a car matching ours with our tag was spotted at a mall there and was being investigated (he wouldn't say for what).  I gave him the tag number on our car now and he said it was also stolen (or "lost" as the police put it).
I called 911 here in Wichita and they sent an officer who took a report.  He said that is becoming a very common crime lately as they steal tags off of the same model and color cars as they put it on.  They think it may fool the cops if they pull a tag check.
We got a new tag at the tag office (after waiting 2 hours) and we plan to check that we have the right tag more often.  Just a word to the wise and hope it doesn't happen to anyone else.

I called the local substation first and they told me to call 911.  The dispatcher there said this happens fairly often and they would send an officer out to investigate and write the report.  Sounded kind of funny to me to call 911 too, but that's the procedure here I guess.

Freekin low lifes! Censored Angry

Sure hope whatever the loosers were doing while they had YOUR tag on their STOLEN car don't come back on you at any time, since they were already being watched/investigated.

Wow! first I heard of anything like that. A police buddy of mine always told me to bend up any old plates you turn into DMV because the good ones go out the back door and are sold to pieces of crap!

A lesson I learned:  After I apply the tag, I take a razor blade and cut several slices into it, including more than one across the  numbers.  If they want to steal my tags, they have to take off about 9 little pieces and then reassemble them. Tongue

To prevent such an incident, I have always used oversized washers and tamper proof fasteners with a center post that comes with an allen wrench with the center post void, that secures the plate to my satisfaction. If anyone does get any of my plates off (all my cars carry this simple anti-theft screw), there would be so much damage that it could not be ignored by an LEO (some have told me they look for exactly that: damaged plates). Most car parts store have these plate install kits. There are other styles of anti-theft devices at these stores or on EBay.
