Hello-

I'm currently restoring the black seats on my '76. My existing seat backs are usable, but have old spray paint flaking off of them. Does anyone know what I can use to completely remove the old paint without damaging the plastic?

I will tell you what I did and you can decide for yourself. After removing the back from the seat, I used a Scotch Brite pad to remove loose paint. Then sprayed them with Krylon Semi-Flat paint. They came out looking great IMO.
An after thought:
I also wiped them down before painting with Pre-Kleeno or Prepsol to remove any oil or wax. A good washing with Simple Green and a brush would also work.

Mine cleaned up allright using a stiff wire brush. I then painted them with interior dye.

Replaced one cracked back on my 78 SA with a nice used back, but it had a ton of paint on it. Used straight lacquer thinner on a rag. Kept soaking the rag and scrubbing the back. Used about a pint for the one back, took off 95% of the old finish. Tried the thinner because I was leery after reading the stripper labels! Mike

Thanks for all of the advice. I ended up using the wire brush to remove the peeling paint, then washed the pieces with an amonia solution & sprayed them with Krylon Fusion black. They came out beautiful.

Thanks Again-
