Hello fellow c3 Vette owners. Just bough my 1981. Was my dream car as a teenager and decided it was time to indulge myself. There have been a lot of hands under the hood it seems, and a few shouldn’t have been. Trying to work out some bugs and clean up under the hood. The belt was off of the air pump, from reading some on the forum I realize that the carb and distributor have been replaced already. No solenoids on the carb and a vacuum line on the distributor and both appear to be brand new. I removed the pump all the hoses and valves and capped the exhaust tubes and made a cover for the EGR valve port. Capped open vacuum ports too. Want to put dual exhaust on it and eliminate the main catalytic converter, that’s all that’s left. I think I read that a stand alone torque converter lockup was also needed. There is a lot of foreign objects on the firewall that are not factory. At one point there was an alarm system on the vehicle and I think some of it may be remnants of that. Also not sure what to do with the fuel tank vapor recovery canister. Some of the hoses had been plugged already. I put an aftermarket Edelbrock air cleaner on it and I’m not sure how to handle the hose that was connected to the stock air cleaner. A lot of gas fumes come from it. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.
Sounds like you have your work cut out for you! If you don't have an assembly instruction manual (AIM) - GET ONE. I guarantee it will be a VERY helpful resource.
One thing I would recommend you do is to get the fuel vapor canister re-plumbed correctly. It is a necessary "evil" that should get rid of the gas odor.
GOOD LUCK...!!!
