Vette(s): 1968 Silverstone Sport Coupe

New to Corvettes, and new to forum, but not real new to the restoration game.

First off: Hello.

My question: I've seen differing information on what the fuel tank was made of for a 1968 Sport Coupe, which I now have.

Was the original fuel tank made of metal or was it plastic?

Thanks,

Stu

Vette(s): 1972 conv, 4-speed, 350, 200hp, numbers match, rally wheels, war bonnett yellow w/white top. good condition, nice driver.

Metal no doubt. Never saw a plastic one available in catalogs, but I suppose it's possible. Welcome to the registry. Need help, just shout. Someone Always has a correct answer. You have found a superior avenue to the 3rd generation of the Best Sports car in America!

Thanks for the reply.

The car I have acquired seems to be mostly all original, down to the stock radio, etc. Most other stuff is there, although the seat cushions, foam, etc were goners, with only the frames remaining. The only thing not original that I have been able to see, thus far, is a replacement engine which replaced the original HE engine (discovered when looking at the engine S/N stamp - boy, the stamping is VERY shallow) and the missing Rochester 7028207 carb (replaced with an electric choke Edelbrock carb. Even the original jack and handle are there, along with stock rims and wheel covers.

Body is somewhat rough (6 of 10). Interior is a 4 of 10.

The replacement block is the correct block, so I guess that it was part of a common issue that I have read about.

The car had been in 'storage' for many years - it's like one of the 'barn finds' that you hear of but never experience.

The last two prior owners (1972 on) of the vehicle were known to me, so I have some knowledge of its' history.

I've yet to locate the build sheet, or even look under the fuel tank, but will be doing that in the next few months.

Stu

All '68-'82 Corvette fuel tanks were plated steel. The later years('78?-'82) tanks had rubberish bladders in them. Here's some info on one for a small block '68 if you're looking for one. Best on the market, bar none.

Vette(s): 1973 Orange Metallic Coupe (orig owner), L82, 4 spd (WR), PS, (A/C & PW (I installed from wrecked 73)), leather, AM/FM Stereo, ran with '65 FI unit earlier & will again some day. 2023 Accelerate Yellow HTC Stingray

Not 100% sure but think it was metal.

Welcome to the forum.

As you may be already aware, the '68 has a number of unique parts which tends to make them more expensive when you go to replace them.  🙁

WELCOME aboard...!!!

A build sheet could be in one or more locations in the car.  But the most likely is on the top of the fuel tank.  If you're lucky you'll find it in fairly good condition but most are a partial one, often quite crispy.  Have fun with the reconditioning...!!!  👍

I'll be sure to share what (if anything) I find, and where.
