Are you able to post a picture? I suspect it's rear defroster, like you said. 

Also, does it really say Stingray on the side of your 79?

That wire should be soldered to the defroster grid on the glass. If you look in the area you'll see where it is supposed to go. I would be very careful if you decide to solder it back on...that glass can shatter quickly if heated to much at once.

Our '78 is an ex-Florida car an d the first owner apparently thought a defroster was not required - I wish he had visited Europe before ordering the car!  

But, soldering the wire onto the the defroster circuit sounds scary!   Just out of interest, is there another way to bond the wire to the defroster?   A purely academic question in my case, but I just wondered......🤔

Thank you all for responding. I used JB Weld Steel stick epoxy and then took the T-tops of and held it down with a wood clamp. It worked really well and I did not need to solder.
