OK I need help (and no funny comments), but before i ask it let me share with you what happened and how dumbish i feel, yes i know if i didn't share you would be none the wiser, but i do this (a) for those who don't know and (b) to give a laugh to those who do.

I recently purchased a radio for my Vette and of course the wiring is different(which is where i need the help), but in trying to figure it out after staring blankly at my 'super duper' Haynes manual it did not help me identify which wires were which, I had figured out the power ones, but the speaker wires eluded me(and still do) so i had a brain flash it's simple i thought i'll just take off the door panels look at the back of the speakers see what color the wires are and problem solved(i can hear the cuckles begining) yeah OK so it took me i moment or two, wrong car dummy the speakers aren't in the doors, fortunatly i realsied this before taking a panel off, so where F$%k are they, OH there they are in the footwell i can see the little holes where the sound comes out, so i removed the rocker panel covers, then the panel covering the speakers and what did i find some bugger had stolen the speakers, no wonder the radio didn't work, oh sh*t i have wasted all that money, OK now your laughter is getting very loud

, yeah while standing back and cursing i noticed the little holes in the Dash top, WHERE THE SPEAKERS ARE, oh bum, well at least it gave me chance to clean out all those leaves from the AIR vent.

When i realsied what i had done i just had to share with you lot, what a dummy.

Now the question which wires are the speaker wires i have two bunches one has Yellow a Blue and a Green wire the other has Dark Green a Light Green and two Blacks obviously each speaker has two wires but what goes to what ? in other words which is the Negative for each speaker and which is the Positive.

It's on a 1976 Vett with front speakers only if that helps.

HELP !

The black wires are the negative wires for sure, but assuming it is an aftermarket radio you purchased new there MUST be a schematic in the box that identifies the wiring. There is usually the positive feed from the key "on" ,a constant feed for the radio "memory",ground wiring, speaker wiring. Each company uses its own colors so it would be hard to guess.Do you have the schematic?Maybe we can help that way or if you know the model of the radio and brand we could search for the wiring diagram. Is it an original vette (GM) radio? If it is we need to know which year it came from and then we can figure which wire goes where.I think your laughing at yourself more than anyone else is.We have all had crazy wiring problems.

Hi

I think i may be misleading you, the bunches of wires I have are on the Vette, the Radio is not a problem they are all clearly marked its the car i have a problem with.

The Vette wires should be the power wire, the speaker wires run off the
radio itself, so the radio schematic should tell you which wires go to what
speaker (+ and -). On my Kenwood the power supply is Red, the ground
Black,
the speakers: left: + is Green, - is green/black,
right: = Gray, - is gray black.
usually the negative has a white strip or color change in the wire...

My 78 wiring diagram colors are different.

If you are going to work on vette wiring, I would suggest you spend the $13 dollars on the complete wiring diagram for your car.  I've used mine to chase down 3-4 shorts and rewire a new aftermarket power antenna ($25 vs $160 bucks)  Here is a link

I have used this to figure out which are the left and right speaker wires and it worked every time. Take a AAA battery, preferably one that has been used some, and touch the speaker wires to the battery. The speaker will hum. One way it will be softer, one way it will be louder. That's the right way. I have done this with cheap and pricey speakers, and never damaged one. I know this is contriversal, but it worked for me. It has saved me from tearing apart a dash or what ever to find the speaker wires and polarity
