My 82 has had intermittent starting issues everything powers on but engine doesn’t crank or click after driving then starts after setting in happened last year and I replaced the solenoid and the starter cable with the fuseable link. I also replaced the battery this year. I didn’t have a problem all year until I had the car in the shop for a different issue and they called to let me now it wouldn’t start after I had just dropped it off they checked wiring to starter and it only showed 6 volts and they could jump starter at starter connection to get to start after that it started every time so they couldn’t check out anything further. I drove it yesterday to the store came out and it wouldn’t start until I waited about an hour, shop thinks it might be starter relay interrupt
Hello, You might try to check the theft system. It can over ride the starter system. Doors and locks, hood position, possibly T-tops. V.A.T.S. systems are finicky.
could be your starter brushes r worn and need to b replaced .i have seen this before ,starts fine when cold but not when hot .the next tine it happens get a hammer and tap it ,if it works ,than brushes r most likely the reason, also could b one r more of the starter wires at the motor itself ,dis connect batt loosen the starter wires inspect and re tighten ,hope that helps car is 40 something yrs old .start with the easy stuff than generally cause this type of problem. also ck all batt connection and make sure batt is fully charged, mike
My '73 383 intermittant starter problem.
Move the key to the Start position: Solenoid clicks. Right away, move key to Start position again: click. Again: click. Again: VROOOM! Doesn't matter if engine is hot or cold.
A while back, I began to install a new Starter. Removed the old, observed the new Starter was of different configuration, didn't wanna deal with it then, re-installed the old Starter, and the intermittent cranking prob went away! One would think my problem had to be in the Starter connections. 6 months later, the intermittent starting problem is now back. Can Start it without clutching it (M20), but the 11.0 compression ratio demands it. (Made an anti-theft circuit outta those clutch safety wires.)
Anyway, I need to check/service my battery. Problem could be there now.
My experience TJ. Good luck.

Same issue for me years ago. Pull into gas station, talk to all the admiring classic car lovers, go to start and no go. Embarrassing. :) Happens a few more times, gets real annoying jump starting the car.
The engine rebuild included alternator, starter, carb, engine harness, etc so why this problem? Shouldn't be any of that.
It's the lousy parts people use to fix things. Probably the solenoid as I had the starter redone a second time, and all is well now.

Worn Starter Solenoid teeth? Starter tightly/securly mounted? Worn flywheel/flex plate teeth?
