The four speed automatic was new for '82 so some things could be different.  If the car has cruise control does it work?  The VSS would be needed for the cruise control.  Guessing the general wiring harness is the same for all cars (please correct me if I'm wrong) so if the car does not have cruise control that plug is most likely an orphan.  According to the Corvette Black Book just under 1,100 cars were built without cruise.

I have the factory service manual for the '82. I have been scouring it, but there is NOTHING on any "speed sensor" attached to the speedo head. Cruise control speed signal comes directly from the speedo on the transmission. The speedometer is cable driven, with a cable from the trans up to the cruise control transducer(under the brake booster), then a cable from the transducer up to the speedometer in the dash. No other sensors are called out.

Does the connector you see appear to be factory, or could it possibly be aftermarket?

My old eyeholes are havin a hard time seein that pic clearly, but....that appears to be an interior light fixture. I'll check the diagrams again to verify the wire colors just to be sure, but I don't see that connection having anything to do with the gauge cluster. I think it attaches to the lower edge of the dash for interior lighting.....

Looks like a courtesy lamp fixture to me also.

that's what i thought at first when he sent me the picture its not clear what that socket looks like. but it has  three wires going to it brn blk/wht pink/black. the only thing i found looking at the wire diagram was a three wire connector that said speed sensor and went down a rabbit hole mystery. if you have the same wire diagram it is on engine compartment next to fuel pump relay. that's when i started searching for info about a speed sensor for and 82. the courtesy lts would only be 2 with 1 color org. he does not have cruise control

Assuming that the connector in question is the same connector on the wiring diagrams listed as "speed sensor"(FSM shows it to be "vehicle speed sensor"), the tracing the wires by color/circuit # gets us:

Brown-circuit 437- goes to the TBI harness connector, terminal "K"

Blk/wht-circuit 450- goes to TBI harness connector terminal "M"

Pnk/blk- circuit 39 @ sensor connector-turns into circuit 439, 12v power from the ECM fuse. This circuit goes to several other connectors, including terminal "G", circuit 39, at the TBI harness connector.

So...all three of these wires terminate/originate at the TBI harness connector. Is there an "overspeed" protection system in play on the '82 Crossfire? Meaning, would it shut down the injectors if a pre-set speed was achieved? Not a clue....never heard of it, but it's just an idea.

Why would the injection system need a speed input?

Why do the wiring diagrams show a "speed sensor" when the speedo itself is gear driven from the transmission?

If the car had cruise control, the "speed sensor" is internal to the transducer, which is driven by the gear driven cable from the trans. The transducer then has another cable going from it up the speedo head. Without cruise, the cable goes directly from the trans to the speedo head.

A better, clearer pic of this mystery connector would be invaluable. I'm kinda stumped....

i will see if he can get a better picture of the connector his dash is back together not sure if it can be pulled down. he lives a couple hours away and weather is an issue so he is not driving it. it seemed like a mystery that would be fun to research. at this time it seems it is not used i will learn if he has any performance issues.

this was something from corvette forum

(From what little I can find/understand the 1982 (with crossfire) has a vehicle speed sensor mounted on the back of the stock speedometer. This evidently sends a signal through a little yellow box to the fuel injection ECM. GM #: 25007278)

GM #25007278 this was the little yellow box with a connector that looked like it would plug into that connector in question

Thanks for all the help i will try to get more info have not been on here for awhile since getting a C5 you guys are always great

Bob

Well then...assuming that info is correct, it would appear that the part is an optical reader attached to the rear of the speedo head, that senses the revolutions of the speedo cable, then translates that into an electrical signal to the ECM. GM parts does NOT show that part number as valid for the '82 Corvette, tho. The mystery continues! 🧐

if i get a better picture i let you know it might just be the courtesy light like i first thought but the picture of the socket not being clear and him giving me the 3 wires going to it that sent me down the rabbit hole. but who doesn't like a good mystery
