Unlike my wife, I hate returning merchandise. I'll be placing an order for an Edelbrock Air-Gap manifold and a Thunder series carb. Haven't decided on an air cleaner but it may come down to that. My question is: Will this setup fit under an L-88 style hood ( similar to a cowl-induction one)? I'm open to suggestions for an air cleaner (drop base vs. regular). Thanks, Guys!

I am running an air-gap rpm and a speed demon.. I use a recessed dish air filter tray.. and it fits "BARELY" under an L-88 style hood.. make sure you get your carb stud as short as possible.

might be more room with an SB

Actually, I forgot to mention it's a smallblock. Going to a hi-rise man. was the reason for getting the L-88 style hood. I just didn't know if the air-gap would be too high. Thanks.

You should be able to get away with it. The suggestion for a recessed base air cleaner is a good idea. Besides giving clearance, you can use a bigger capacity, less restrictive air filter.

Wow, that recessed base really makes a difference.

Thank you, all.

I have a Factory L-88 hood with a Edlebrock RPM Air-gap manifold. My carb is a Speed Demon 850 and using the drop type airfilter base with the "wedding cake" air filter setup I am able to close my hood and get a good seal.

This is on a 427 on a 1968 roadster. It works with the Big block for me. By base engine I assume that you mean a 350? If it fits for me I would imagine you wouldn't have too much trouble.

Good luck and enjoy that new setup you got coming. I just wish I could have had the option of the shiny finish on my air gap, I spent 40 hours plus making my smooth and then shiny.

Chris

Thanks, boys for all the input...

BTW, Chris, what's a "wedding cake" air cleaner setup? My curiosity is only surpassed by my "lack of car knowledge" |biggrin| . I try to thank everyone occasionally for their patience and understanding.

JR |saluteflag|

P.S. It is a base 350......and I'm shootin' the works, gettin' the "shiny one"

The wedding cake air filter setup refers to what GM used on the real L-88 engines in Corvettes.

The wedding cake air filter setup uses a drop base that fits tightly around the carb and then has a screen element that fits in a ring on the top part of the base. The base also has a foam sealing ring on it near the outer edge that seals to the hood when the hood is closed. The screen is about 5 inches in diameter and 2 and 1/2 inches tall and has a small cover/lid that screws down like a normal air filter top. Inside the hood there is a second filter ring with a foam element on it like your lawnmower probably has on it. That is all there is for filtering the air. When you look at the assembly on top of an engine it has the "Wedding cake" appearance.

The whole idea is to make the air filter only be able to breath cool outside air. It is very similar to the cowl induction hoods used on other GM's.

The guy I bought my hood from had a documented L-88 and used it for racing so he removed the hood and air filter assembly and set it aside. Years after the car was destroyed he brought it to Carlisle and I bought it from him. I didn't really believe that it was a real L-88 hood until my Corvette shop verified it and with the original parts it seems to be a valuable item.

I don't know what the aftermarket hoods look like underneath or whether they have functional cowl induction. The cowl induction is really cool when you have a backfire as you get to see it in it's full glory.

Good luck and I hope that this answers your questions!!
The negative to the wedding cake assembly is that it has virtually no filtering ability. In the hood sandwiched between two layers of glass is a larger round screen

I got this one from eckler's and it's basically concave underneath (unfinished, rough fiberglass). It's an extra $109.99 if you want the fresh air chamber, but it's only functional with an L-88 air cleaner, which by the way, I know exactly what you're referring to when you say wedding cake now. Thanks, Chris.
